What does a website really cost in 2026? Typical price ranges by site type, hidden yearly costs, and how to get a quote you can trust.
You need a new website, you ask three agencies for a price, and you get three numbers that look like they came from three different planets. One says $2,000, another says $15,000, and a third will not give a number until you have had two calls. If you are trying to work out a fair website design cost in 2026, the confusion is normal.
This guide explains what you are really paying for, the typical price ranges in the USA, UK, Canada and Europe, and a simple process to get a quote you can trust. The ranges below are typical market ranges, not fixed prices. Your project may differ.
Why website prices vary so much
Two websites can look similar on the surface and still be very different projects underneath. The price depends mostly on:
- Number of unique page layouts, not just the number of pages. Ten service pages that share one template cost far less than ten pages that are each designed from scratch.
- Custom design vs a theme. A purchased theme with your logo and colors is cheaper than a design created for your brand.
- Content. Who writes the text, who sources the photos, and who moves content from your old site.
- Functionality. Booking, payments, member areas, multi-language and integrations with a CRM or ERP add real development time.
- SEO foundations. Clean structure, speed, schema and redirects take time to do properly.
- Who builds it. A freelancer, a small studio and a large agency have very different overheads.
If your site needs logins, dashboards or complex logic, it may be closer to a web application than a website. Our guide on web app vs mobile app explains the difference.
Typical website design cost by type (2026)
These are typical ranges we see across the market for professionally built sites. Rough conversions are given for UK, EU and Canadian readers, but local rates differ.
Starter website (5 to 10 pages)
A clean, mobile-friendly site for a local business or consultant, usually built on a well-chosen theme or a light custom design.
- Typical range: $2,000 to $6,000 (about £1,600 to £4,800, €1,800 to €5,500, CA$2,700 to CA$8,200)
- Timeline: 3 to 6 weeks
Business website (10 to 30 pages)
Custom design, a content management system your team can edit, contact forms, basic integrations, and solid on-page SEO.
- Typical range: $6,000 to $20,000 (about £4,800 to £16,000, €5,500 to €18,500, CA$8,200 to CA$27,000)
- Timeline: 6 to 12 weeks
Ecommerce website
Product catalogue, cart, payments, shipping rules, tax settings and order emails.
- Typical range: $10,000 to $40,000 depending on catalogue size and integrations
- Timeline: 8 to 16 weeks
Custom web platform
Portals, marketplaces, booking platforms and sites with user accounts or custom logic.
- Typical range: $25,000 to $80,000 and up
- Timeline: 3 to 6 months

Ongoing costs people forget
The build is only part of the total. Budget for these every year:
- Domain name: usually a small yearly fee.
- Hosting: from a few dollars a month for shared hosting to a few hundred for managed cloud hosting on a busy site.
- Maintenance and updates: plugin, theme and security updates, backups and uptime checks. Many businesses pay a monthly care plan.
- Content updates and new pages as your business grows.
- SEO and marketing. A website nobody finds does not earn its cost back. See how much SEO services cost for typical monthly budgets.
A useful rule of thumb: plan for yearly running costs of roughly 10% to 20% of the build price. Your figure may be lower for a simple site and higher for an online store.
Price differences between the USA, UK, Canada and Europe
Rates follow local salaries and the cost of running a business. In general, agencies in major US cities and London charge the most, while Canadian and many mainland European agencies sit a little lower. Eastern Europe and offshore teams can be much cheaper per hour.
Hourly rate is not the whole story, though. A cheaper team that needs twice the hours, or that you have to manage closely, can end up costing more. Our guide to outsourcing software development covers how to compare teams fairly.
There are also legal differences. A site that collects personal data from visitors in the UK or EU needs to follow GDPR or UK GDPR, Californian visitors are covered by the CCPA, and Canadian businesses follow PIPEDA. Cookie banners, privacy notices and form consent all take a little time to set up properly. Read our GDPR and CCPA basics for software for an overview.
How to get an accurate website quote: 6 steps
Follow this process and the quotes you receive will be easier to compare and much closer to the final bill.

1. Write down your goal
One sentence is enough: "We want more booked consultations from local customers" or "We want to sell our products online in the UK and EU." The goal decides what the site must do.
2. List your pages and features
Make a simple sitemap: home, about, services, each service page, blog, contact. Then list features such as booking, payments, newsletter signup or a client login. Our list of 15 must-have small business website features is a good starting point.
3. Decide who provides content
Will you write the text and supply photos, or do you need copywriting and photography? Content is one of the most common reasons projects run late and over budget.
4. Choose a platform direction
Do you want WordPress, a hosted builder, or a custom build? Each has a different price and running cost. Compare them in our WordPress vs custom website guide.
5. Ask for a fixed, itemized quote
Send the same brief to every company and ask for a fixed price with a line for each part: design, development, content, SEO setup, training and launch. Itemized quotes show you exactly where the money goes.
6. Compare scope, not just price
Check what is included in each quote: number of design revisions, mobile testing, speed work, redirects from your old site, and support after launch. The lowest quote often leaves these out. Our guide on how to choose a web design company lists the questions to ask.
Ways to reduce the cost without cutting quality
- Start with the pages that matter most. Launch with your key service pages and add more later.
- Reuse templates. Ask for a few strong page layouts that your team can use for many pages.
- Prepare content early. Ready text and photos save days of back and forth.
- Avoid features nobody uses. Every feature has a build cost and a maintenance cost.
- Plan in phases. Like an MVP, a focused first version lets you learn what customers actually use.
If you are replacing an existing site, protect what already works. Our website redesign checklist explains how to keep your search traffic during the move.
Red flags in website quotes
- A price with no list of what is included
- No mention of mobile design, speed or SEO basics
- You will not own the domain, hosting account or content
- Unlimited revisions for a very low price (something will give)
- A long lock-in contract for hosting you cannot move
Frequently asked questions
How much does a small business website cost in 2026?
A professionally built small business website typically costs between $2,000 and $20,000, depending on the number of unique pages, custom design and features. Simple sites sit at the lower end and custom designed sites with integrations at the higher end.
Is it cheaper to build a website myself?
A DIY website builder costs less upfront, but you pay with your time and you may hit limits on design, speed and SEO. Many businesses start with DIY and move to a professional build once the website becomes an important source of leads.
How long does it take to build a website?
A starter site often takes 3 to 6 weeks and a custom business site 6 to 12 weeks. Delays usually come from content and feedback, not from development. See our website design process for what happens in each stage.
What should be included in a website quote?
A good quote lists design, development, content, SEO setup, testing, launch, training and post-launch support, with a clear number of revisions and a timeline. It should also confirm that you own the site and its content.
