Picking the wrong development partner is expensive. These 12 questions help you compare companies and choose one you can trust with your product.
Hiring a software development company is one of the biggest decisions a growing business makes. The right partner turns your idea into a product that customers love. The wrong one costs months of time, a large budget and, often, code you have to throw away.
The good news is that the difference between the two usually shows up early, if you ask the right questions. Use the list below in your first calls with every company you are considering.

1. Have you built something similar before?
Ask for two or three projects that are close to yours in industry, size or features. A company that has already built a booking system, a logistics dashboard or a marketplace will avoid mistakes that a first-timer will make on your budget.
2. Can I speak to a past client?
Case studies are written by the company. A ten minute call with a real client tells you how they handle deadlines, bad news and changes. Ask the client: "Would you hire them again?"
3. Who will actually work on my project?
Some companies sell with senior people and then hand the work to juniors. Ask who your project manager will be, who the lead developer is and whether you can meet them before you sign.

4. How do you estimate time and cost?
A trustworthy company explains how they reached a number. Be careful with estimates given after one short call with no questions about your users, features or integrations. Good estimates come from a discovery step where requirements are written down.
5. Fixed price or time and materials?
Both can work:
- Fixed price is best when the scope is clear. You know the total before work starts.
- Time and materials suits products that will change as you learn from users. You pay for the hours used and can change direction.
Ask which model they recommend for your project and why.
6. How will I see progress?
You should never wait months to see your product. Look for companies that share working software every one or two weeks, give you access to a project board, and send short written updates.
7. Who owns the code?
Your contract should say that you own 100% of the source code, designs and documentation once you pay. You should also have access to the code repository from day one, not only at the end.
8. Will you sign an NDA?
Any professional company will sign a non-disclosure agreement before you share sensitive details about your idea or business.
9. How do you test the software?
Ask about automated tests, manual testing on real devices, and how bugs are tracked. A company without a clear testing process will hand the testing over to your customers.
10. What happens after launch?
Software needs updates, security patches and new features. Ask about support plans, response times for urgent problems and the cost of ongoing maintenance.
11. How do you handle changes?
Requirements always change. A good partner has a simple process: you describe the change, they estimate its impact on time and cost, and you approve it before work starts. No surprise invoices.

12. What do you need from me?
Great projects are a partnership. A good company will be clear about what they need from you: quick answers, access to your team, test data and feedback on each demo.

Red flags to watch for
- A price far below every other quote
- No written proposal or scope
- They agree to everything without asking questions
- You cannot meet the team
- They want to keep the code until the final payment with no access before
The bottom line
Choose the company that asks you the most thoughtful questions, explains their process clearly and gives you full ownership and visibility. Price matters, but the cheapest quote is rarely the cheapest project.
