iOS App Development Company: A Buyer's Checklist

How to judge an iOS app development company on Swift skills, App Store know-how and long-term support before you sign a contract.

Apple users tend to expect polish. They notice when scrolling stutters, when a button sits slightly off, or when an app ignores system settings like Dark Mode and larger text. That raises the bar for whoever builds your iPhone or iPad app. A capable iOS app development company understands the platform's conventions and the App Store's rules as well as the code itself. This checklist will help you separate specialists from generalists.

Check their grasp of the Apple ecosystem

Start with the technology. Modern iOS apps are written in Swift, and many new interfaces use SwiftUI alongside or instead of the older UIKit. Ask which they prefer and why. A thoughtful answer will mention trade-offs, such as SwiftUI speeding up development while UIKit still offers finer control in certain situations.

Also ask about the wider ecosystem. Will your app need widgets, Apple Watch support, Sign in with Apple, Apple Pay or HealthKit? Teams that have shipped these features before will flag the extra review requirements and design rules that come with them.

Make sure they know the App Store well

Getting through App Store review is part of the job. Apple publishes detailed guidelines, and rejections often come from things like unclear permission prompts, incomplete account deletion flows or in-app purchase rules. An experienced company plans for these from the design stage.

Questions that test their knowledge:

  • How do you prepare the App Privacy details, sometimes called privacy nutrition labels?
  • How do you handle in-app purchases and subscriptions under Apple's rules?
  • What is your process if a build is rejected?
  • How do you use TestFlight to get our feedback before release?

Look for human interface sensitivity

Apple's Human Interface Guidelines describe how iOS apps should look and behave. You do not need to read them yourself, but your partner should know them well. Look at their past apps on your own iPhone. Do they support Dynamic Type? Do they feel native, or like a website squeezed into a phone? Small details here signal a team that cares about iOS users.

Understand what drives the price

US iOS projects are usually priced as a fixed bid for a defined scope or billed on time and materials across sprints. Either way, the effort depends on the number of screens, custom animations, offline support, integrations with your backend or third-party services, and whether iPad, Watch or Mac versions are part of the plan. Ongoing costs include Apple's developer programme membership, hosting for any backend and maintenance to keep pace with yearly iOS releases. Ask vendors to show these as separate items.

Privacy and compliance

Apple's App Tracking Transparency framework requires permission before tracking users across other companies' apps and sites. On top of that, US state privacy laws such as the CCPA may apply depending on where your users live. Health and finance apps bring further rules. Your partner should help you design data collection to be minimal and clearly explained.

Ownership and accounts

Insist that the Apple Developer account, certificates and App Store Connect listing belong to your organisation, with the vendor added as a team member. This avoids painful transfers if you ever change suppliers.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an iPad version too?

Not always. Many apps can run acceptably on iPad with little extra work, but if tablets are a major use case, a layout designed for larger screens is worth planning.

How often will the app need updating?

At minimum, plan for an update after each major iOS release so the app stays compatible and takes advantage of new features users expect.

Should we build iOS first?

If your audience skews towards iPhone, starting there can make sense. Otherwise a cross-platform approach may let you reach both stores together.
