How to Set Up Conversion Tracking for Leads

If you cannot see which channels produce enquiries, you cannot invest wisely. Here is how to track form, call and booking leads accurately.

For a lead-generation business, a website visit is only interesting if it ends in a conversation. Conversion tracking is what tells you which pages, campaigns and channels produce those conversations. Without it, marketing budgets are set on gut feeling. With it, you can confidently do more of what works and stop what does not.

List every way a lead can reach you

Start with an honest inventory of contact routes. Many businesses track only the main form and miss half their enquiries. Typical routes include:

  • Contact and quote request forms.
  • Booking or appointment widgets.
  • Phone calls from numbers shown on the site.
  • Clicks on email addresses.
  • Live chat and chatbot conversations.
  • WhatsApp or messaging buttons.
  • Downloads of brochures or price guides that require details.

Rank these by how valuable they usually are. A quote request is often worth more than a newsletter signup, and your tracking should reflect that difference.

Track forms by success, not by clicks

The most common error is counting a button click as a lead. People click submit and then hit a validation error, or click twice. Better options are:

  1. A thank-you page. Redirect after successful submission and track visits to that page. Simple and reliable, provided the page is not reachable any other way.
  2. A success event. If the form shows a message without changing page, have developers push an event when submission succeeds, which Google Tag Manager can pick up.
  3. Form tool integrations. Many form builders send their own confirmation events.

Test each form yourself after setup, using preview or debug modes, and confirm exactly one conversion is recorded.

Track phone calls

Clicks on a phone link from mobile are easy to track as an event, but they show intent rather than a completed call. For a fuller picture, call tracking services can show a different number to visitors from different sources and record when calls actually connect and how long they last. Make sure you inform callers if calls are recorded, in line with local law.

Track bookings and chat

Booking tools often run in an embedded frame, which can hide events from your analytics. Check whether the tool supports sending events to your tag manager, or use its confirmation redirect. For chat, track when a conversation starts and, more usefully, when a visitor leaves contact details.

Send conversions to ad platforms carefully

If you run Google Ads or social ads, those platforms need conversion data to optimise. Import your key events rather than creating separate, inconsistent tracking in each tool. Choose counting settings deliberately: for lead forms, counting one conversion per click usually makes more sense than counting every submission from the same person.

Capture the source in your CRM

Analytics shows patterns, but your CRM shows which leads became customers. Add hidden fields to forms that capture the traffic source, campaign and landing page, then pass them into the CRM with each submission. Over time you can see not just which channels bring leads, but which bring good ones. If your current tools cannot do this, a tailored lead management system or a simple automation can bridge the gap.

Respect consent

Where consent is required, conversion tags should respect visitor choices. Configure consent mode or equivalent settings so tracking adapts rather than ignoring preferences.

Keep a tracking log

Record what each tag does, when it was added and who added it. Websites change, forms get replaced, and tracking breaks silently. A monthly check that test submissions still register will save confusion later.

FAQ

What is a reasonable number of conversion types to track?

Track every genuine lead route, but mark only the most valuable ones as primary conversions for reporting and ad optimisation. Secondary actions can be monitored without clouding the main numbers.

Why do my ad platform and analytics show different lead counts?

They use different attribution models, time windows and counting rules. Pick one source of truth for business reporting and use the others for platform-specific optimisation.

Can I track leads without cookies?

Some measurement is possible with server-side tracking and consent mode modelling, but accuracy drops. Capturing source data directly in forms and the CRM remains valuable regardless.
